Chiropractic adjustments to the musculoskeletal system

A chiropractic adjustment is the (usually) manual restoration of normal mobility and function of the spine to restore normal function of the nervous system. It corrects the source of the problem and removes the physical blockage interfering with nerve impulse transmission.

For which applications and problems is chiropractic helpful?

GOOD TO KNOW

Chiropractic has always been an important part of my career and a good chiropractor can maximize results.
– Arnold Schwarzenegger

(Arnold Schwarzenegger knew about the importance to have a good chiropractor)

A blocked cervical vertebra can therefore be the cause of any number of disc problems and the aggravation of the central nervous system can also even have a detrimental effect on individual organs.
– Christian Domittner DC

Depending on how chronic the problem is, the Chiropractor will have to apply one or a series of adjustments in order to restore proper pain-free motion.

The cooperation between the Chiropractor and athletes or sports persons is a particularly close one.
The Chiropractor analyses motion sequences and finds weak spots that can lead to damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints if they are not corrected.

These corrections improve the sporting performance and form the basis for later success.

The Chiropractor is a graduate of at a university abroad awarded with a doctor’s degree.
The university study course comprises of 4,822 hours and includes theoretical as well as practical clinical experience.

I studied at Life University in Georgia for 5 years and graduated in 2004 as Doctor of Chiropractic.

The chiropractor understands adjustment as defined by the WHO as a therapeutic chiropractic procedure that acts on specific joints and the adjacent tissues with controlled force, leverage, direction, amplitude and speed.

We work with Newton’s second law (principle of action) – vector and speed, due to which the change of movement occurs in the direction of the straight line where that force acts.

FAQ

The term is derived from Greek and means “to treat with the hand”.

Chiropractic was developed by D.D. Palmer in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa, USA. From then on Chiropractic has developed into the biggest division of naturopathy  (natural healing). Today Chiropractic has become an independent scientific discipline based on manual treatment methods as well as therapy and prophylaxis of reversible functional disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system.

The Chiropractic profession deals with the relationship between structure (spinal column) and function (nervous system) of the human body by restoring and maintaining health.

Chiropractic is a holistic method which is based on the self-healing properties of the body and removes the cause of the disturbance instead of simply concentrating on the symptoms.

This means that surgical methods are not required in order to normalize and strengthen the functions of the nervous system. Successes are often achieved after only a few treatments.

The Chiropractor

The Chiropractor is a graduate of at a university abroad awarded with a doctor’s degree.
The education and training a Chiropractor receives, specialises in orthopaedics and neurology. Doctors of Chiropractic are in a position to correctly interpret x-ray images. Through their training, they have acquired special manual and technical methods required for the examination and treatment of the musculoskeletal system and have a deep knowledge of human neurology and biomechanics as well as a great understanding of the many different problems that can stem from neuromuscular disorders.

The university study course comprises of 4,822 hours and includes theoretical as well as practical clinical experience.

I use Chiropractic to unite the physical body with the spiritual body

(D.D. Palmer, Founder of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, 1895)

This was the statement that D.D. Palmer made that forever separated/differentiated Chiropractic from conventional medicine in that Chiropractic is hereby classified as belonging to the philosophy of vitalism. To understand how Chiropractic actually functions, we first of all need to understand the meaning of vitalism as well as its connection to the ability of Chiropractic to actively support the body’s own self-healing system (especially when all other attempts have failed).

Classic vitalism describes human nature from not only physical, emotional and mental aspects, but also includes spiritual aspects. Vitalism is based on the belief that a form of cosmic intelligence exists within the universe which leads and guides everything.

Chiropractic refers to this phenomena as “Universal Intelligence”, the main premise being that Universal Intelligence exists everywhere.

Albert Einstein also shared this opinion.

He stated that “Everybody who has seriously explored science will arrive at the conviction that a spiritual entity is part of the laws of the universe.”

The philosophy of Chiropractic recognises the existence of an innate, natural life energy within the body that regulated all functions. Interference can occur between this natural life energy and the spinal column (or with any anatomic structure). Chiropractic refers to this interference as vertebral subluxation. Sub-lux-ation means a suppression of light. A vertebral subluxation is a defective position of one or more vertebrae which in-turn disturb the function of the nervous system.

“A subluxation means that there is pressure acting on the nerves which causes abnormal function of the nervous system which in-turn creates a pathologic change in the body which has either already manifested itself or is in the process of developing.”

(DD und BJ Palmer: The Science of Chiropractic)

A subluxation is caused by physical stress (birth, accident), emotional stress (interpersonal relationships), and chemical stress (substances that have been ingested or the body exposed to).
Subluxations can be corrected and the optimum vital state (a fully functioning nervous system) restored. Chiropractors free the body from subluxations, release the suppressed life energy and restore the normal function of the nervous system and stimulate the body’s self-healing power.

A Chiropractor uses gentle, controlled and targeted pressure on different areas of the spinal column in order to restore the biomechanics of the spinal column and the function of the nervous system.

It is the objective to correct all problems that can stem from blockages to the flow of information to and from the brain.
Disruptions to this critical communication system can produce symptoms ranging from pain through to illness.

Depending on how chronic the problem is, the Chiropractor will have to apply one or a series of adjustments in order to restore proper pain-free motion. The Chiropractor can offer precise help with problems of a clearly skeletal or muscular nature by locating and correcting neuromuscular disorders of the spinal column in their early stages. Clients can thus be helped by having their body produced its own healing response whilst any possible tissue damage is still minimal and reversible.

Limitations or blockages to the mobility of our vertebrae can occur.
These impair the harmony of movement of the whole spinal column as well as the function of the nervous system and the tension created this way is conveyed to the meninges (the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord). Chiropractors refer to this as vertebral subluxation.

When we feel pain and our nervous system is negatively influenced, the body will try to compensate for this defective position by either shifting other vertebra or using its muscles. This results in having problems with the whole body structure and posture.

A blocked cervical vertebra can therefore be the cause of any number of disc problems and the aggravation of the central nervous system can also even have a detrimental effect on individual organs. These conditions make it quite clear how very much your own personal well-being depends on the condition of your whole musculoskeletal system. This is precisely where the Chiropractic skills are applied..

An adjustment is very specific and it is possible (and/or necessary) to receive several adjustments a week without any damage or detrition appearing at the vertebrae and the respective vertebral discs, muscles, tendons or ligaments.

Phases of Chiropractic treatment

  1. stop
  2. preserve
  3. maintain

The first phase is directed at halting the impairment of the vital state caused by a subluxation.
This phase lasts for 3-6 weeks and during this time 1-2 adjustment a week are necessary.

The second phase is directed at preserving the state of being free from Subluxation.
During this phase it is necessary to carry on with the Chiropractic treatment in a disciplined manner because doing this period the body is given the possibility to restructure and to heal itself. If Chiropractic treatments is broken off during this phase any successes and well-being so-far achieved could be lost. This phase lasts for 2-6 months and during this time 1-2 adjustment per month are recommended.

The third phase is directed at maintaining the achieved condition.
Regular Chiropractic check-ups make sure that no long-lasting subluxations occur any more. In this phase you will have got used to the subluxation free state of your spine and will be able to feel for yourself when it is time for a check-up. This phase lasts for as long as you are exposed to physical, emotional and chemical stress – normally all life long.

Reactions to adjustments are varied and individual and also depend on how long the subluxation has already lasted. In some cases, there can be a physical reaction which may last anywhere between 1-3 days which may give the impression as if the condition would deteriorate. This is the body’s so called “ healing crisis” which can be compared to an adjustment response.

  • I recognise the existence of an innate and natural life energy in the human body that regulates all functions.
  • It is my aim is a Chiropractor to release this life energy (light) in the human body.
  • I concentrate solely on locating Chiropractic subluxations and their correction through adjustment.
  • I see the human body as a self-healing organism and it is my aim to support this process.
  • The Cafe of Life® objective is to inform the public about the philosophy, science and art of Chiropractic.
